Song of Dhola Sadiya | historical reality very well expressed by Kalpana Patowary

On 26th May 2017 India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s longest river bridge, the Dhola Sadiya bridge in Assam, over the river Lohit, a tributary of Brahmaputra near China Border, bringing Assam and Arunachal Pradesh closer. The bridge is named after the legendary Bard of Brahmaputra Bhupen Hazarika.

While the entire nation has its eye on it, a song is born on this Dhola Sadiya bridge featuring Sadiya, it’s ancient history and cultural heritage - a unique song by the Assamese Bhojpuri Folk activist Kalpana Patowary.

Despite being a household name in the Bhojpuri heartland (as also in Assam) Kalpana Patowary aspires for more a just the fame that the film industry brings. That’s the very reason why this multi-faceted artiste has worked on several unique project that focus on different musical genres and manage to dig into the cultural practices and the history of those very regions and came out with several pearls of musical wisdom making her own in roads into the musical history of her home-state and the Heartland.

The lyrics of the Dhola Sadiya song have been penned by poet - lyricist, Teacher, Author, Research Supervisor - Dinesh Baishya. Composition and Acoustic guitar by Santanu Borah and Violin by Manoj Baruah.

Talking about the theme of the song, Kalpana Patowary said, the idea behind this song was to keep a thought afresh in minds of people that creativity drives a Nation.

Sadiya or Xodiya for me and many of us, is like a Fairy Land..as if, a place which is not very easily reachable, a fantasy land from our childhood storybooks. I always wanted to go there from my childhood times when i used to listen to the songs on Xodiya and xotful by legendary artiste of Assam late Khogen Mahanta’s “ma ami xodiyaloi jaamei”. It is also the birth place of my Idol Guru Bhupen Hazarika. So i was very happy when i was informed of my musical presence on the inaugurating event of the historical Dhola Xodiya bridge on 26th May 2017 to be inaugurated by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi..Indias’s longest river bridge on mighty river Luit. I thought it to make further more memorable by creating a musical note. It was not easy for me to express myself in lyrical words as now i know the historical significance of Xodiya, the hub of the many ethnic diverse tribes building today’s Assam. As a Folk Root Artiste i had to carry the responsibility of it. After much pondering there came only one name Dinesh Baishya Sir…I went to his place, met him and expressed my thoughts…..next day there came the song ready.

This song was released on 21st June as the whole world celebrates Music that day as World Music Day. Let the whole world know about this bridge and about Sadiya, let Sadiya be on the world map. LONG LIVE SADIYA!! LONG LIVE DHOLA SADIYA BRIDGE, THE BHUPEN HAZARIKA SETU.

Talking about the musical travelogue the lyricist Dinesh Baishya expresses, on the occasion of World Music Day 2017 finally the song entitled the song of Dhola Sadiya, sung by Kalpana Patowary one of the most popular singer of the country has been released in the You Tube. The lyric was composed by me on the eve of inauguration of the Dhala Sadia bridge, in a very short notice of just few hours. I tried my best to incorporate the history and culture of this part of the country remembering the great kingdom of Chutia community, the great kings and the subjects. Sadia was the capital of Chutia Kingdom and there was an international market where musks perfumes, elephant tusks , cotton , salt , metals and rare poisons used by the warriors and hunting communities for hunting and also in arrow heads, were bartered. Trading communities like Abor , Khamti, Moshimi and other largely traded their products in the great Sadiya market.

The lyrics was composed keeping in mind, the sentiments of Rongmons, the boat men of the rivers who sailed boats to carry man, animals and goods since time immemorial, who have to loose their jobs after the bridge is opened.

Kalpana has sung the song with great sincerity. She has adopted the tune from folk music of the people of the region. A very soft and meaningful music has been attuned to the song. I feel extremely happy. This song is the first song with my lyric released in You Tube.

Rangbaaj fagunwa aail - This song speak of the indication of the coming of the season and how a couple enjoys their love after a long separation. Husband has to go to ‘Pardes’ to earn money. His beloved wife waits the whole year for him to come back & this year when he returns in Holi, her happiness knows no bounds. This song also speaks of the sensusiousness, the urge of their physical union.

Ab lehu rangwa lagai – A traditional Holi song reflecting Indian tradition linking Holi to Lord Rama and Sita. Sita’s sahelis welcomes Rama to Janakpur and urges Sita to play Holi with Rama as who knows when again he will be again coming from Avadh.

Dewra rangbaaj – A spicy or a chatpata song where the lady is complaining about her brother-in-law. In Indian family – Dewar Bhabi relationship speaks in different levels, sometimes he is a son, other times a best friend with whom you can share your inner feelings also. But in ‘Fagun’ ie Holi the Dewar becomes a little flirty kind of and he teases his sister in law. This is a double meaning song.

Piyawa calcutta gaile – Many years before while speaking about the Bihar scenario, lots of young man travelled to East Calcutta for livelihood. Back home the beloved wife cries in agony. No more she can hold the pain of separation. This track captures this particular mood of that lady.

Babu Kunwar Singh – This is traditional ‘Dhamar’ a holi folk form. Here it speaks of the historical spectacle of Babu Veer Kunwar Singh of Bihar as he fought for our Nations Independence from the British. Here colors of Holi is symbolic to the bloodshed. This song salutes Kunwar Sings fighting spirit.

Ab kaha fafuwa gawata – Again, a traditional Holi composition where the song expresses the descending ‘Fagua’ tradition. Today, everywhere there is hatred among us. We are no more celebrating the human race, instead speaking of our own cult and castes. The song is trying to express the message of the unity we need today – An awareness song.

Maa-e-Ri, the upcoming hindi music video album of singer Kalpana is already creating waves in terms of concept, location & picturization. Music has always been a great vehicle for a social message. And now,the latest in this well-intentioned lineage is singer Kalpana (who can forget her hit track Tere Ishq Se Meetha from film Aakrosh and Aila Re Aila from film Khatta Meetha) who is geared up for her new hindi album Maa-e-Ri.This is the first rare album on nature and releasing a full length album of 6 tracks. "There has been a cry for saving the enviornment,save the earth in the nation and worldwide. We have done a huge damage to the universe through pollution. Through this album, Kalpana is potraying herself as messenger of mankind and urging people to come together and spread the message to love and save the Nature", explains Kalpana.
