I was more inclined towards dancing - Kalpana Patowary.

As a kid, she was more inclined towards dancing but was literally forced into learning music by her father. She never thought she would take up singing as a career, but life takes its own turn. And today, this Assamese girl is the darling of the North Indian belt and has been christened the uncrowned Queen of Bhojpuri music. Kalpana’s father Bipin Patowary was a radio artist and made her take classical training in music. She started performing on stage at the age of four. In school she chose music as one of her optional subjects and while in college she was adjusted the best singer in an inter collegiate competition. Kalpana also performed in radio---singing Thumri and Bhajans. But till that point of time she never thought singing would be her profession and earn her kudos one day.By this time Kalpana had become quite popular in Assam doing stage programmers and singing western based songs. She shifted to Mumbai in 2001 to nurture her talent. It did not take her long to get a break in Mumbai. She got her first assignment with Times Music to sing a remix version of the 70’s hit “My Heart Is Beating”…..And that was the beginning she needed to carve a niche for herself. Offers started pouring in fast and she started singing in different languages.
